The Weird Mob’s Cinema

The Weird Mob film festival is a retrospective of Italian-Australian film.
The films deal with many relevant issues of the Italian community migrating and growing up in Australia.

The Film Forums on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th May provide an opportunity for a deeper understanding of the Italian- Australian experience.
The topics covered range from ‘Rights and Alienation’ to a ‘Youth Cinema Forum’.

The Film Forums are a marathon of discussions, short films, speeches, features, insights and documentaries. The directors of the films, academics and representatives of the community will shed light on the topics covered by the short films and documentaries.

Please see below for the topic areas covered on the Film Forum days.

The experience of migration can be so compelling that its waves reaches also the next generation, the sons and daughters of that ‘weird mob’ that came here long ago. Second generations are still affected by their parent’s struggles but in different ways. Their parents had to find a way to survive and give their offspring some hope. Second generations have instead the need to ‘fit in’, to find a balance between what their parents are, what the society is and how they want to be. This is not an easy task However, as can be seen by the movies made by young Italo-Australian directors in this retrospective, for second generations family is not just about conflict and strict rules. The experiences of these young people with an ‘Italian family’ are also about love and bonds, that precious type of love that helps to grow up and gives us the strength to face the world. Furthermore second generations’ stories are also about their parents’ memories of a distant land and how these have affected their lives.

Damian Cassar, Ruth Borgobello, Jason Di Rosso, Thomas Scire, Adrian Bosich, Andrea Del Bosco, Linda Mirabilio will present their shorts and participate in the Forum.
