History of the Venues

Parliament House of NSW: Architect unknown. In 1829, the north wing of the Rum Hospital was requisitioned and converted to accommodate the NSW Parliament House, as this was the largest building in Sydney at the time. The parliamentary chamber was soon attached at the north end, followed by the Legislative Council Chamber (at the southern end) in 1856. The second chamber is a prefabricated cast iron building that was originally being shipped to Victoria from Glasgow (Scotland) to become a church. This is still the seat of government in NSW today.

Balmain Town Hall: Architect: Edward Harman Buchanan, 1859-1943. The Balmain council used to hold their meetings in a stone cottage on the site of the present town hall. In 1881, the council chambers were added to the back of the cottage. In 1888, the cottage was demolished and in its place, a clerk’s residence and the town hall were added. The town hall is askew to Darling Street as was the cottage that it was built on.
